  1. Execellent utility Erik....simple to use and very effective.
Any plans to include USB drives? (a common way to transfer files between mac and windows is via USB flash drive (stick))

Thanks. Doesn't it work with USB drives? In that case, you'll have to write me a bug report because it shouldn't matter what means you use to connect the drive to your computer.
I have used HFSExplorer together with USB drives more than once, so it shouldn't be a problem.

  3. ....I've just noticed - you already have - USB drives/flash drives etc appear as "....harddisk(n)..." - lists flashdrives files etc, and easily extractable - very excellent!

  4. Really Erik this is such a great application! It had no problems opening an ISO in HFS format and I could copy all data off the Mac-formatted image! thanks for this program.

  5. Hi Erik,

Nice work. It worked for me!

Are there any plans to allow a mac drive to be mounted and assigned a drive letter?
Such as the way that Pragon's EXT2fs program works?

Also, any plans for write support?

    Cheers,
    Steve.

  6. Thanks for this handy utility! It worked great for recovering data off a drive that kept causing Mac OS to hang on corrupt files.

  7. wow. MACDRIVE couldn't even open my "corrupt" HFS+ MAC partition and your software did it in an instant. sadly, it won't let me open files ( i have to extract them) nor replace files or edit any files on the partition... which would fix the problem. o well. thanks for helpin me backup.

  8. Does HFSExplorer require Administrator access on the machine?

I've been trying, and failing, to access my Mac-formatted iPod on my work computer. Here's the error message I've been getting from HFSExplorer:

    C:\>hfsx.bat browse \GLOBAL??\G:
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.RuntimeException: Could not open file.

  9. That didn't come out well... here it is, with the lines broken to fit. I should also note that I've tried several other formulations of the path, including \Device\Harddisk2 and various of the USB devices, but I always seem to get either a 'no device found' error or the message below.

    C:\>hfsx.bat browse \GLOBAL??\G:
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.RuntimeException: Could not open file.

  10. Hi,

I tried to copy a very large tree (flat, only 2 or 3 levels, but 450GB) from HFS to NTFS, but HFSExplorer stops (freezed) after 100-120 GB. Any idea?
It would be helpful in such situations if there would be a button "Skip an continue all" for this case for restart and a second attempt.
    Thank you for all,
    Martin

  11. Simply awsome. I am using it on a corrupt drive and its allowing me to back up my customers files. The only problem Im having is I have to confirm extraction of files Ive chosen after it finds one it cant extract. Its good to let me know that it couldnt extract a file but I would love to see a "yes to all" choice or configuration in the program so I dont have to keep an eye on the extraction process. Thanks for your hard work Erik. I will be paypaling you soon.

I used this to access a mac formatted ipod given to me by a friend. I used Windows XP SP2.
I wanted to extract the music before reformatting the iPod for Windows use.

    What worked for me was:
*Install HFSExplorer 0.19 and use autodetect (control+L) to find the Mac formatted iPod connected via USB (detected as Harddrive1/Partion1)
    *Navigate to Ipod_Control/Music folder
*Recreate Ipod_Control/Music folder layout (drive F on my WinXP machine)
*Hightlight a folder (ie: FOO) and click extract
*When prompted for location navigated to F:\Ipod_Control\Music - which appeared in the File Name window as well.
*Click OK and extraction proceeded without a problem.

I was confused at first and kept trying to type in a file name on the last step and got errors, but once I just accepted F:\Ipod_Control\Music as the file name, it worked like magic!

It recreated the FOO folder and copied all the contents to it.

Hope this helps someone who might be struggling as I did at first.

    What a wonderful product.

  13. A-Squared Anti-Malware(Commercial) reports a trojan in the archive.
A-Squared Free (before upgrade[Give Away of the Day]) reproted the same trojan in the HSF un-installer.

    Which trojan?...
    why snip/ Trojan-PSW.Win32.IEPass.a snip/.

I STILL have HFS installed and hope to make use of it soon.

Did you really get the installer from the Catacombae sourceforge download page? In that case, I think you have a false positive. I created all the release files myself, and I have antivirus software installed (NOD32).

  15. I am getting the same thing - Clamwin is reporting that both the installer and the uninstaller have a virus, Trojan.PSW.IEPass.

I downloaded HFSExplorer from this link:

    http://downloads.sourceforge.net/catacombae/hfsexplorer-0_19_5-setup.exe?use_mirror=osdn

I hope this is a false positive. I've used the program and found it very helpful, otherwise.

  16. Violet:

This seems to be a common issue that Clamwin has with applications packaged with NSIS installers.
Check out this link, which describes a similar issue:

    http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?threadid=295267

You should report this false positive to Clamwin. I scanned through my entire source repository with NOD32, latest definitions, and no virus was found.

  17. Violet:

If you are at all uncertain about a specific file, there is a way to get it scanned by a large number of antivirus engines at:

    http://www.virustotal.com/

For hfsexplorer-0_19_5-setup.exe, the only antivirus engine that reports a virus in this file is ClamAV.

  18. Hi Erik, I tried to compile HFSExplorer, but there is missing org.catacombae.util in sources. Is it a mistake or you don't want to publish it ?

Also, if you just need to compile the HFSExplorer component you can just supply the class path to the framework jar file when compiling... no need to re-compile it from source.
    Check the source distribution's build.xml.
